Lewis and Clark is the rural region south of Astoria, where the Lewis and Clark River and the Youngs River wind through pasture and second-growth timber toward Youngs Bay. It is farm country ten minutes from the river city — dairies, tree farms, the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park at Fort Clatsop — and the road network of Youngs River Road, Lewis and Clark Road and Logan Road connects it to Astoria in one direction and the Highway 101 corridor in the other.
Property here is acreage. Homes sit on parcels measured in acres rather than square feet, ranging from working farmsteads and older farmhouses to newer custom homes on cleared hillside lots with views down the valley. It is the part of the North Coast where a buyer can find land, privacy and barns within a short drive of the ocean, the bridge and the hospital.
The valley floor along the Lewis and Clark River is the flattest, most open farmland in Clatsop County, with the river meandering between dikes and the Fort Clatsop replica at its lower end. Properties here are generally larger acreages with older farm buildings, riverfront, and the kind of level ground that is rare on this coast.
Miles Crossing is the junction where the valley roads meet Highway 101 Business at the head of Youngs Bay, and the Youngs River road climbs south from it toward Youngs River Falls. Homes along this stretch range from small acreages near the crossing to more remote parcels up the river, with the Astoria hospital and the south slope shopping a few minutes north.
Above the valley floors the land rises into timbered hills on both sides, and this is where much of the newer construction sits — custom homes on cleared lots of several acres, with views over the valley or toward Saddle Mountain, on gravel roads off the county routes. Water is often well, waste is septic, and the sites reward a look at access and slope before anything else.
